WALL STREET - INDIA

Disclaimer : There is nothing in this post even remotely related to stock markets. :P

The Delhi rape in one way or the other jolted people from all sects of the society from a slumber - a slumber which ran so deep that in many senses it  became like the "limbo" from the movie Inception. And such a shame it is to say that we needed an inhuman act to wake us up. This post per se, is not about the rape case, the inadequacy of India's judiciary or the so-called "male-bashing".

I have tried asking myself "Why" such things happen or to put it better, why such things still exist, in a race that is by far of superior intelligence and senses among all in the heirarchy of creation. One of the answers that my head throws up is "walls". We all have built our own walls - walls as high and strong we can afford to build so that we do not hear what's outside - to feed the fallacy that "my world withing walls is perfect". Infact our society has impressed upon us the need to build these walls right from the day we step into it.

If you are a student, you are expected to join the "best school", "best coaching centre", opt for the "good courses" (translated to those which will guarantee you a reasonable number of thousands per month even if they offer you slavery), behave well ( essentially means DO NOT QUESTION when you're asked to follow something by "reliable" people for "your own good" )  -- WALL NO.1 - to make sure you can build a strong wall no.2!

IF you have successfully built Wall No.1(or even not), then the next step is to build a stronger wall no.2 - which stands for money. The money you rake in, directly relates to the social standing you get,in turn, the "circle" you move around, the power that comes out of the affinity with the circle - in short, the lifestyle you lead and the personal ego you feed!Sometimes, the ego-feed is so high that it gives you the guts to commit a crime fully aware. The Wall's strength is the amount of "insulation" you can afford to have while not compromising on your current lifestyle.

Lets take an example for this. You are upper-middle class. Milk price gets hiked by 1 Re a litre. You don't even think about it more than a minute. Because your "insulator" protects you from this. Petrol prices get a whooping increase of 10 Rs per litre. Suddenly, you cant afford to drive to office anymore. Your wall isnt strong enough. And here, the course of action gets to making wall no.2 more "fortified"(i.e try getting better income), instead of not even stopping to think "why" the wall broke. And this is exactly where we fail- because we are always running behind work-arounds for a problem and never behind a solution! We are always racing for a futile exercise of "insulating" ourselves so that we can tick-off items from our worry list and pretend things are fine.

India has become a big time "Wall street" in this sense. There are absurd systems in practice in the society and we discourage people who question the systems and instead tell them to play along with the system in a way as to reap maximum benefits from it.Within our walls,we do not want children questioning elders,we do not want employees questioning bosses,we do not want wives questioning husbands and vice versa and we do not want our people questioning politicians. Outside our walls, WE SIMPLY DONT CARE!

Evil in humans has always existed and will exist, but it will dare not raise its head for fear of being severed, if only we did not have walls which drown the cries of the victims.
